Whose Idea Was It to Kill Jesus?

Every crime in history has had a different plan, but one thing they’ve all had in common: the idea in the first place for the crime to be a success. And the bigger the risk involved, the better the plan needed for the crime to be foolproof.

In the case of Mark 14, we read the factually correct historical account where Jesus of Nazareth is the target of a crime. In verses 1–2, we see three components to the plan to kill Jesus. The Sanhedrin wanted Jesus dead because He preached the message that He was the Messiah, but that salvation required repentance from one’s own sin and trusting in this man Jesus as the Saviour Son of God. He was devastating to their desire for their positions of authority and stature among the people of Israel.

They needed a plan to get Jesus killed without losing the support of the people of Israel, and while not inciting the skepticism and crackdown of the Roman government. In looking at Mark 14:1–2, we are going to see whose idea it really was to kill Jesus of Nazareth, the Saviour of sinners... and why that matters to you listening today.
