“I AM the Light of the World
In our message we’ll take a deeper look at the meaning, importance, and implications of Jesus’ statement—“I AM the Light of the World”—in John Chapter 8.
These “I AM” proclamations point to Jesus’ unique, divine identity and purpose. What did Jesus mean when He declared “I AM the Light of the World”? I like this metaphor because it is so easy to understand and identify with. But then Jesus did that all the time. He regularly took the common, everyday things of life and used them to illustrate spiritual truth. He took bread—a universal staple food and “the staff of life” in the Middle East—and said, “I AM the Bread of Life.” He pointed to doors and gates—some of the most common things in the world—and taught His followers, “I AM the Door.” He saw the sunrise and candlelight and said, “I AM the Light of the World.”
As we explore what Jesus meant, we’ll also discover that this truth is as applicable to us today as it was for His original audience.
