The Great ‘I AM’—’I AM The Door

We continue to explore “The Great ‘I AM’” declarations of Jesus found only in John’s Gospel. We’ll take a deeper look at the third of seven “I AM” statements—“I AM The Door”—found in John Chapter 10.


These “I AM” proclamations point to His unique, divine identity and purpose. In this “I AM” statement, Jesus points out the exclusive nature of salvation by saying that He is “The Door”, not “a door”. What did Jesus mean when He declared “I AM The Door”? I like this “door” metaphor because it is so easy to understand and identify with. But then, Jesus did that all the time. He regularly took the common, everyday things of life that He observed and everybody knew about and used them to illustrate spiritual truth. He took bread—everyone knows bread—and said, “I Am the Bread of Life”. He saw the sunrise and candlelight and said, “I Am the Light of the World”. And in John 10:9, He declared …
