The Writing on the Wall

We have all heard someone say, “The writing’s on the wall” or “You can see the writing on the wall.” Most people understand this means that trouble or calamity is coming, but it has been applied to any kind of situation, like a failing business or relationship that’s in trouble. But where does this saying come from and what does it actually mean? We will find out in Daniel 5 as we look at King Belshazzar and a frightening sight he sees of a literal hand writing a message on the wall of the palace. The next two messages will focus on this scene and we will likely not look at this phrase the same way again.
